Starting, Stopping and Narrow Passages

Starting and Stopping

  • Starting and stopping are automatic actions; verbalisation is not required.
  • Preferably, the guide uses the leg on the side of the hold to communicate forward motion.
  • Movements not perceptible through touch are communicated verbally.

Changing Direction (± 90°)

The guide communicates direction changes physically, by rotating their body.

Passing Through Narrow Passages

  • Short narrow passage (plier grip): the guide’s movement communicates the passage to the blind person, who positions themselves behind the guide. Once finished, the arm is brought forward to return to the original position.
  • Long narrow passage: the blind person’s hand slides from the guide’s elbow to the wrist, with the other hand on the guide’s shoulder. The guide takes shorter steps to prevent stepping on the blind person’s feet.
