Barriers to Participation

Barriers to Participation

Young people with visual impairments may experience different barriers that affect their participation.

  • Environmental barriers – unclear room layouts, poor lighting, obstacles or activities that rely only on visual information.
  • Attitudinal barriers – low expectations, stereotypes, overprotection or assuming a young person always needs help.
  • Institutional barriers – inaccessible materials, limited staff training and activities that are not designed with inclusion in mind.

Removing these barriers creates opportunities for participation, confidence and independence.
