Stairs and Toilet Guidance

Stairs

Stairs can be emotionally challenging; the guide moves with fluidity and confidence.

  • Going up: stop at the first step; the guide steps first with the guiding-side leg, and a clear arm movement signals the step. At the top, the guide pauses with a longer step.
  • Going down: step first with the guiding-side leg and maintain synchronisation. Calm, stable movement reduces emotional stress.

Toilet Guidance

  • Describe the layout and fixture positions.
  • Help locate the toilet with the foot; indicate flush, toilet paper, soap and towels.
  • Ensure the person identifies all elements before leaving the bathroom.
