Sensory Barriers

Sensory Barriers

Challenges in the environment that hinder perception and orientation for people with visual impairments. Examples include:

  • Lack of tactile ground indicators, especially near stairs or hazards
  • Absence of acoustic signals at traffic lights or pedestrian crossings
  • Poor visual contrast on tactile paths, stairs or doorways
  • Inadequate lighting (too dim, uneven or poorly positioned)
  • Visual signage that is too small, poorly lit or badly positioned
