Topic 4: Vademecum for Communicating with a Blind or Visually Impaired Person

1. Approach and Introduction

  • Always introduce yourself when you start a conversation, especially if the person does not know you. Example: “Hi, I’m Marco. Nice to meet you!”
  • Don’t avoid words like “see” or “look” — they are part of everyday language and blind people use them too.
  • If you walk away or end a conversation, let the person know so they are not left speaking into silence.

2. Language and Verbal Communication

  • Speak directly to the person, at a normal volume (unless they also have hearing difficulties).
  • Use specific descriptions. Example: “The door is two steps to your left.”
  • Avoid vague gestures or phrases like “over there” or “this/that” unless paired with a clear description or, if appropriate, a light touch on a neutral body zone.
